Travel Visas & Entry Requirements

Understand visa requirements for U.S. passport holders, visa-free destinations, and how to check entry requirements for your destination.

Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa depends entirely on your destination, the purpose of your travel (tourism, business, study), and how long you plan to stay. As a U.S. passport holder, you have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries and territories — but many popular destinations still require visas in advance.

Visa-Free Entry

No visa required. Show your passport at entry. Typically allowed 30-90 days for tourism.

Visa on Arrival

Obtain your visa when you land at the airport. May require passport photos and cash payment.

Visa Required in Advance

Apply before travel at an embassy, consulate, or online (e-Visa). Processing times vary.

Always check the most current requirements before booking travel. Visa policies change, and the information here is for general guidance only.

Note: "Visa-free" typically means you can enter without a pre-approved visa for short stays (usually 30-90 days). You may still need a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds. Some countries require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or e-Visa, which is obtained online before travel.

The Six-Month Validity Rule

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date. This is known as the "six-month validity rule."

RequirementExamples
6 months validityChina, Brazil, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, Indonesia, most of Asia and South America
3 months validityMost Schengen Area countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.)
Duration of stayUnited Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, South Korea
No specific requirementCanada, Mexico (but must be valid for duration of stay)

Tip: Even if your destination does not require 6 months of validity, airlines may have their own rules. It is safest to renew your passport if it expires within 6 months of your travel dates.

How to Apply for a Visa

Visa application processes vary by country, but generally follow these steps:

1

3

Gather Documents

Common requirements include your passport, passport photos, flight itinerary, hotel reservations, bank statements, and a visa fee.
