U.S. Passport Types Explained

Large book, standard book, and passport card — the differences, costs, and which one is right for your travel needs.

Passport Books: Large vs. Standard

The passport book is the traditional passport format and the only option accepted for international air travel. There are two sizes available, and both cost the same.

Large Passport Book

  • 52 visa pages (more space for stamps and visas)
  • Ideal for frequent international travelers
  • Same cost as the standard book ($130)
  • Slightly bulkier to carry

Standard Passport Book

  • 28 visa pages
  • More compact and pocket-friendly
  • Same cost as the large book ($130)
  • May need earlier renewal if you travel frequently

Our Recommendation

Unless you have a specific reason to want the smaller size, always choose the large passport book. It costs the same, gives you nearly double the pages, and saves you from needing an early renewal if you travel frequently.

The Passport Card

The passport card is a wallet-sized alternative to the passport book. It is cheaper and more convenient to carry, but it comes with significant travel limitations.

What You Can Do With a Card

  • Land border crossings to Canada and Mexico
  • Sea port entries from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean
  • Use as REAL ID for domestic flights
  • Proof of citizenship and identity

What You Cannot Do With a Card

  • International air travel to any destination
  • Entry to countries outside North America and the Caribbean
  • Obtain visas (most countries require a passport book)
  • Use for cruises that stop in countries outside the approved list

The passport card costs $65 for adults and is valid for 10 years. It is a great option if you frequently drive to Canada or Mexico, or if you want a compact REAL ID alternative. However, if there is any chance you will fly internationally, you need a passport book.

Which Passport Should You Get?

Choose the Large Passport Book if: You plan to travel internationally by air, even occasionally. It costs the same as the standard book and gives you more pages.

Choose the Passport Card if: You only travel to Canada or Mexico by land or sea, and you never fly internationally. It is cheaper and more convenient to carry.

Choose Both if: You frequently cross land borders and also fly internationally. The combo ($195) gives you the flexibility of the book plus the convenience of the card.
