Do You Qualify for Mail-In Renewal?
You can renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 if ALL of the following are true:
1. You have your most recent passport in your possession
2. Your most recent passport is undamaged (other than normal wear and tear)
3. Your most recent passport was issued when you were age 16 or older
4. Your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years
5. Your most recent passport was issued in your current name (or you have legal documentation of your name change)
If any of these are NOT true, you must apply in person using Form DS-11.
Step-by-Step DS-82 Renewal Process
#
Step 1: Complete Form DS-82
You can fill out Form DS-82 online at the State Department's Form Filler tool or print a blank PDF. The online tool is recommended because it:
- Validates your entries as you type
- Generates a 2D barcode for faster processing
- Reduces the chance of errors
#
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
You will need:
- Your most recent U.S. passport
- One new passport photo (taken within the last 6 months)
- Name change documentation (if applicable) — marriage certificate, court order, or divorce decree
#
Step 3: Calculate Your Fees
As of 2026, renewal fees are:
- **Large Passport Book**: $130
- **Passport Card**: $65
- **Large Book + Card**: $195
- **Expedited Service**: Add $60
- **1-2 Day Delivery**: Add $22.05
Make your check or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State."
#
Step 4: Mail Your Application
Place the following in a large envelope (do not fold the form):
- Completed Form DS-82
- Your most recent passport
- One passport photo (staple it to the form in the designated area)
- Name change documents (if applicable)
- Check or money order for the correct amount
Mail to the address listed on the form. Use a trackable delivery method (USPS Priority Mail or UPS/FedEx).
Processing Times
- **Routine**: 4-8 weeks
- **Expedited**: 3-4 weeks (write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the envelope)
What Happens to Your Old Passport?
Your old passport book or card will be returned to you separately from your new passport. It will be invalidated (the corner will be clipped), but you should keep it as proof of citizenship and for any valid visas it contains.
Common DS-82 Mistakes
1. **Signing the form before completing it** — Sign only in the presence of the acceptance agent (for DS-11) or after printing (for DS-82)
2. **Wrong check amount** — Double-check current fees on travel.state.gov
3. **Old passport photo** — Must be taken within the last 6 months
4. **Not including the old passport** — You must submit your most recent passport with your renewal
5. **Using the wrong form** — If you do not meet all 5 eligibility criteria, you must use DS-11 in person
What If Your Passport Is Damaged?
If your passport has significant water damage, torn pages, unauthorized markings, or a damaged chip (for e-passports), you cannot renew by mail. You must apply in person using Form DS-11 and pay all applicable fees.
Renewing While Abroad
If you are living outside the United States, you can renew your passport at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Processing times vary by location but typically range from 2-4 weeks.
Renewing a Child's Passport
Children under 16 cannot renew by mail. Both parents must appear with the child at an acceptance facility and apply using Form DS-11. Children aged 16-17 may apply on their own, but a parent should be aware of the application.
