- Automated kiosk check-in at customs (no forms to fill out)
- Faster re-entry after international travel
- Available at 75+ U.S. airports and select preclearance locations
Cost Comparison

Application Process
#
TSA PreCheck
1. Complete an online application at tsa.gov/precheck
2. Schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center (usually within 2 weeks)
3. Attend a 10-minute appointment with fingerprinting and ID verification
4. Receive your Known Traveler Number (KTN) in 3-5 days
#
Global Entry
1. Create a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) account at ttp.dhs.gov
2. Complete the online application ($120 non-refundable fee)
3. Wait for conditional approval (can take 2-6 months)
4. Schedule and attend an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center
5. Receive your Global Entry card and Known Traveler Number
Interview Availability
Global Entry interviews have been notoriously difficult to schedule due to high demand. However, several options now exist:
#
Enrollment on Arrival
Complete your interview when returning from an international trip at participating airports. No appointment needed — just go to the Global Entry kiosk and an officer will complete your interview.
#
Remote Interviews
Some locations now offer video interviews, allowing you to complete the process from home.
#
Pop-Up Events
CBP occasionally hosts mobile enrollment events in cities without permanent centers.
Which Should You Choose?
#
Choose TSA PreCheck If:
- You only travel domestically
- You want the fastest approval process
- You want the lowest cost
- You do not have any international travel planned
#
Choose Global Entry If:
- You travel internationally (even occasionally)
- You want both programs for only slightly more money
- You have a credit card that reimburses the fee
- You want the most comprehensive trusted traveler benefit
Our Recommendation
For most travelers, **Global Entry is the better value**. For just $42 more than PreCheck over 5 years, you get both programs. If you travel internationally even once during those 5 years, Global Entry pays for itself in time saved at customs.
If you genuinely never leave the country, TSA PreCheck is perfectly sufficient and gets you through the application process faster.
Adding Your KTN to Bookings
Once approved, add your Known Traveler Number to every airline profile and booking:
- Log into your frequent flyer accounts and add it to your profile
- Enter it when purchasing tickets
- Most airlines allow you to add it after booking through their website or app
Without your KTN attached to your ticket, you will not receive PreCheck on that flight even if you are enrolled in the program.
